Bright beautiful butterflies (Brilliant Wings dies / Best Year)

by Kylie

Hi everyone, today we are creating something a little different but I think you are going to love it although it can get a little messy! We are going to watercolour butterflies from the Brilliant Wings die set to create a birthday card. My card was inspired by a Stampin’ Up!® sample card.

Start by die-cutting the detailed butterflies from the Brilliant Wings set out of Fluid 100 Watercolour Paper. Pick out the ink colours you would like to use. I chose Granny Apple Green, Mango Melody, Poppy Parade, Polished Pink, Fresh Freesia and Balmy Blue. Press the ink onto a large clear block. Add water to both the watercolour paper and the ink, then play. Use Water Painters to cover the entire butterfly but also press the butterfly into the ink. I had tried to get different colour variations on each piece. Some worked better than others. Repeat until all butterflies are inked up and set aside to dry.

While the butterflies are drying, I die-cut the solid butterflies (also from the Brilliant Wings die set) from Vellum. As for the card, I created the card base from Basic Black cardstock. I cut an additional panel from this cardstock and embossed it with the Brick & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder. This was then adhered to the card front. White heat emboss your sentiment on Basic Black cardstock. I used the ‘Happy Birthday to You’ greeting from the Best Year stamp set.

When the watercolour butterflies are dry add some Wink of Stella to the surface. It will look so good. I decided to do this step at the end but it is much easier to do it at this stage. Next, adhere the watercolour butterflies to the vellum butterflies. and position them on your card front. Stick them down when you are happy with the placement.

Finish the card by adding some Rhinestones and the sentiment. If my white gel pen had not run out of ink I would have added small dashes to indicate they were flying too. I did add a little line with the Wink of Stella. It’s subtle but doesn’t look too bad.

Here’s the card…

I totally love how gorgeous the watercoloured butterflies look against the Basic Black cardstock. I so wish you could see the gorgeous shimmer on each of the butterflies too. This really finishes off the card perfectly! The card looks so much better in real life!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Hope you have a great day!
