Hi everyone! I wanted to make a card to celebrate Al’s mum’s 80th birthday. As his mum is a young 80 (and who doesn’t want a big fuss), I wanted to create something playful and joyful. As I still had Lawn Fawn’s Capybara and Capybara Add-On stamp sets on my table, I felt like they would be a perfect fit, especially when paired with the Cake It Easy stamp set. I thought it would be fun to create a happy and cute birthday scene—complete with a big, celebratory cake topped with number candles to mark the occasion.
Creating the Background
To bring the scene to life, I started with ink blending. I used Stampin’ Up!® Daffodil Delight for the yellow and Distress Inks in Picked Raspberry, Mowed Lawn, and Vintage Photo. After blending the colours, I spattered water over the sky and grassy area to create texture and interest. I didn’t do this on the ground section, which was inked with Vintage Photo—and honestly, I wish I had. I think some ink spatter would have helped give the look of rocks or pebbles. Next time, for sure!
Paper Piecing to the Rescue
Originally, I planned to colour all of the cakes with my Copic markers, but I wasn’t happy with how they turned out. I coloured quite a few versions, but none of them looked right. After a bit of frustration, I decided to switch gears and paper piece the icing instead. I used the Doodlebug Designs Hey Cupcake 6×6 paper pad, and it completely saved the day! The patterned paper added a bit of texture and fun, without the colouring stress.
Cake Colouring Combos
I’d really love to get better at colouring cakes! If you have any favourite Copic colour combinations for cake or icing, I’d love it if you shared them. It’s one of those things I always seem to overthink.
The sentiment is from the Simply Sentiments set by Lawn Fawn, and I added a few party hats to complete the look. It turned out fun and festive. Of course, I had to finish the card with some shimmer. I love this card – way too cute!
Here’s the card…
Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope this card brought a smile to your face! If you have any go-to Copic colour combos for cakes or icing, I’d love to hear them!
