Hi everyone! Today’s card is a bit of a mystery… or rather, it solves one! I had a great time creating this detective-themed birthday card using the Case Closed collection by Hero Arts. The moment I saw this collection, I couldn’t wait to create with it!
Cracking the Code
This card is based on the design featured on the packaging of the stamps and die sets. I didn’t mean it to be, but that is just how it ended up. I loved the combination of the Miss Detective stamp set with the Magnifying Glass die set. It was so fun to make the magnifying glass. I first die cut it from black cardstock, but then decided I needed a wooden handle. After making the handle, I added vellum to give the appearance of glass. Finally, I decided it needed a gold frame to shine so I layered that as well. The fun, layered sentiment: “The secret is out… It’s your birthday!” really finished off the card perfectly.
The main image on this card was from the Miss Detective stamp set. I have to say this was both fun, and not fun to colour. I was so out of practice colouring hair and skin. My first attempt ended up in the bin, but I was so happy with my second attempt. I used a Houndstooth stencil to create a pattern for her hat and cape. I loved how it turned out. The pink and grey looks so classic! I used the same pink ink for her mouth, which helped everything coordinate nicely.
Finishing Touches
To tie it all together, I added some abstract fingerprints to the background for extra texture without taking attention away from the main image. I also decided to add a base of the gold foil cardstock so that it tied in with the magnifying glass. Strangely, and unusually for me, I didn’t add any shimmer to this card, although you certainly could. Maybe in the next iteration?!
