What do you do when your mojo goes missing? 16 hints to help you!

by Kylie

Hi everyone, it can be annoying when your creative mojo seems to up and take a vacation.  It doesn’t matter whether you are a career demonstrator or a hobbyist, there are times when you need to create, or want to create, and nothing comes easily.  Here are a few strategies you can think about implementing the next time your mojo goes missing…

  1. Don’t try and force it – stop and take a break. Go for a walk, make a cuppa, anything which removes you from your current environment.  Some fresh air and fresh eyes may be all that it takes to reinvigorate your crafting.
  2. Clean your space. As you put things away, you might find yourself inspired by the things you are handling.
  3. Pinterest – look at Pinterest for things which might inspire you. If you are like me, you might want to stay away from other card makers.  When I’m missing mojo, seeing other people’s creations doesn’t inspire me, I, instead, feel more overwhelmed. Fashion or home décor pins may inspire you as you notice the different colours and themes.  Set a time limit so you don’t waste too much time.  The idea is to inspire.
  4. Read Blogs – go and visit some of your favourite bloggers and see what they share. (If you do visit, please take time to drop a quick comment. As a blogger, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate everyone who stops to drop me a note.  I’ve been blogging for a couple of years now and comments never cease to make my day).
  5. YouTube – this is a bit like Pinterest/Blogs. Perhaps look up some new technique or fold to learn or go in a completely different direction and look up some painters or graphic designers.
  6. Limit your supplies – for example, pick out three colours of ink and one stamp set and see what you can create. Sometimes we become overwhelmed by all our supplies and we just need to go back to basics.
  7. Challenge yourself – there are lots of challenges out on the internet from colour challenges to sketch challenges. Pick one and get to it.
  8. Set a timer – see what you can create in ten minutes. It doesn’t have to be perfect; just see what you can do.  I’ve done this challenge and it truthfully was a challenge.  After the timer sounded, my card was woeful.  I then sat down and created a card which was what I had been trying to achieve.  It was a fantastic challenge.
  9. Complete a kit – let someone else do all the design work. All you need to do is the assembly.  Often by the end of the kit, you are all inspired to create your own projects.  I have quite a few kits in my online store.  You can see them here.
  10. Talk with crafty friends – my crafty friends are a constant source of inspiration to me.
  11. Go shopping – spoil yourself with something you HAVE been inspired by.
  12. Keep a sketch/notebook – write down ideas or sketch card ideas you have so that you can refer to it during those periods when the ideas aren’t so free-flowing.
  13. CASE yourself – pick out one of your cards and CASE it using a different stamp set or even just a different colour combination, or layout orientation. (CASE = Copy And Share Everything)
  14. CASE one of your favourite card makers – if you love the work of a cardmaker, CASE one of their cards. Just remember that if you share it online you need to give credit to the original designer.
  15. CASE the catalogue – there are so many fantastic ideas in the Stampin’ Up! Catalogue. Pick one of the designs and copy them.  Change up the bits you want to or recreate it faithfully – whatever suits.  Once again, if you do share it online, please ensure you give credit to the original artist (or state that it was inspired by the Stampin’ Up! Catalogue).
  16. If you are a business Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator, take the time to work on other aspects of your business.

And finally a couple of what not to do’s….

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others.
  2. Don’t talk negatively to yourself.

Remember, this will pass.  Be kind to yourself until it does.  What other things do you do to help find your missing mojo?

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Hope you have a great day!

Happy Stamping, Kylie

Super advice, not just for card making but other creative avenues. I especially liked the DON’T talk negative to yourself! That’s one my daughter has been trying to teach me about EVERY DAY LIFE for years! Thank you and stamp on! ; )

Thanks, Susan! I think we can all be way too hard on ourselves at the best of times, let alone when things aren’t quite going right. Your daughter sounds very wise! 🙂 Thanks for commenting, I really appreciate it! Hope you have a fantastic day! 🙂
